Suffering Our Limitations
Do not accept life. This is no game, this is our life to own or our life to lose. Life doesn't have to be something that happens to us, it can unfold with purpose, with intent. Whatever that purpose may be, whether it's ordinary or extraordinary, specific or general, we all have the ability to influence the pressures that bear down on us. Life is an uphill struggle for every day we choose to step forward. There's no easy day that involves growth. So, to grow, to expand, to not go gentle into that good night (Thomas, 1951), we must intentionally choose the hard path, with our backs facing the masses that may mock us for stepping out of line. And as the journey to ourselves expands, the crowds' whispers will silence as the world shares a peace that only the weary traveler may know.
We all have limitations and most of us will never meet those limitations. For the most part, we all dabble somewhere south of our real potential. Even those of us seeking to be freed from the tyranny of the mind and to experience deep peace, presence, and wholeness, have a difficult road to travel. Maybe we can ponder the question, ‘is there any real need to max out our potential in this world?’ I think the answer lies within all of us. The answer will be different for all of us. My thought is that doing less than we are capable of is disheartening. Go through life utterly exhausted, we only have about 7 decades to grow, to experience, to give, to hurt, to love, and then we have an eternity to be no more.
People have come a long way with many steps forward and countless fumbles back. We still have oceans to traverse in order to overcome our ignorance’s, our missteps, misunderstandings, and differences. It may just take one of us to break through the next obstacle holding humanity back. Limitations matter, grasping for them matters more. No exceptions, no excuses, no regrets. Overcome the ape.
