Planet of the Ape Mind
To understand a bit of how our minds behave can give us huge gains in our ability to rise to the head of the pack. Your mind and my mind have a natural superstar talent to obsess over worst case scenarios. Take a look around anytime you are near humans, many of them if not most of them are defaulting to a predisposition mindset allowing minor meaningless issues to boil over, spill out and make a mess of nothing. The next time you are surrounded by coworkers sit back and listen to the conversations. You will hear about problems, issues, reasons why nothing ever changes or gets better. Better yet you will hear hot gossip and you can watch the concerns spread like a poisonous fog from one person to another. Panic may set in as the worst-case scenarios are embraced and clung to. People focus on obstacles instead of focusing on what can be done. The truth is worst-case scenarios rarely if ever come true. How many times have you stressed about being fired from your job? Put it in perspective over time, how many years or decades have you worried about being fired versus how many times you've actually been fired. All the worry, all the sleepless nights, that's you succumbing to your ape mind. When a worst-case scenario does happen, guess what else happens, life, it still moves forward. You and I find a way to adapt, get back up, wipe ourselves off and get back to the grind.
Life is not easy. As far as I can tell life will be what you work hard at making it. Life’s not fair, life doesn't always feel good but paying attention to your mind and making conscious decisions to better serve you will open doors and knock down walls you didn't know were there. Your mind is geared to survive and capable of believing anything and everything. It can process many possible scenarios and quite often does but rarely accurately or in line with what unfolds. What typically grips you and I are all the ways things can go wrong. We worry about what could happen, this behavior can be changed and needs to be changed. How would you feel if your default thinking was best-case scenarios and you slept soundly at night because whatever goes on the next day is going to be the best you can make it? This is where you must take your mind. Breaking the habit of worrying can be difficult but being aware of it is a good start.
So where do we start? What's the trick? How do you change your mind and mend it into something that allows you to power forward into any endeavor you set your mind to and achieve it? Flip the switch in your head, make it a one-way switch, going back is not an option. It is literally your decision to step up, get uncomfortable, be relentless and force you're thinking to take a path that inspires you. Don't start small, start huge, go big, do not let your mind allow your life to slip by one more day. The voice in your head that wants you to rest because you are exhausted, the voice that says it's not fair you didn't get the promotion or recognition, and most of all the voice that says we will start tomorrow - all of them need to be told to f**k off! The voice that says we will start later needs to be strangled every day of your life until it doesn't have the balls to show up. The tomorrow voice will satiate you to a nice old age of 90 and let you die with a ton of regret on your grave. There is no tomorrow! Get moving now, do something to improve your situation. If you have no idea what to do that's an important realization, you’re thinking, keep thinking, find a way to physical action ASAP! Thinking, planning, organizing and scheduling get you nowhere without energy, action and movement. Get uncomfortable get pissed but get moving to the life you day dream about. It's better to grind hard and die trying than to stay put and stay comfortable. No regrets should be your new motto. Get your mind right by any means necessary, whatever it takes and start now. Surround yourself with books, podcast, music, videos, YouTube anything to keep your momentum going. As you make progress on silencing the ape inside your head your ability to take massive action to achieve goals will improve. Failure is giving up, you will experience great disappointments more mental anguish and second guessing than ever before but don’t stop!. Get strong, get straight, you can do It, I promise.
